Spanish Dance

This is Lewis' hand as he practices his guitar, currently three times a day! It's lovely to hear the music percolating through the house as though it were music on a CD. Spanish Dance is one of my favourites which always makes me smile, especially welcome on a grey day like today.

The artist at work!

As chance would have it I was recorded taking this picture of Greg by Johanna at the weekend so I thought I'd post the pair as a reminder of my input. This portrait was shot (no pun intended) through a piece of iron about 50mm thick which had been punctured by a ballistic attack at Hurst Castle...

The whole Clan

It's not often that you get to see the whole Brown Clan on the blog together at once, but here's one from the weekend of us playing on the Dragon at Denny Wood (taken by Johanna)

Hurst Castle

It was bright and blustery this morning when we got up, after a rather bumpy night on the Miranda front. So we decided to go to Keyhaven to blow the cobwebs away.

After walking down the spit we had an hour or two inside the castle playing with all the guns and canons, and dungeons and the like.... before facing the long walk back with the wind against us!

....read me a story!

We had a visit today from Johanna, so the boys had great fun wrapping her around their little fingers. Greg as usual looking fairly captivated, although you can bet he'll know what's going to happen long before the end!

Just like that!

Miranda's been watching Gregory doing his tricks, so here she is working her magic! Not really... It's just one of those moments caught by the camera, that has a life of it's own...

It'll be your Downfall

I've been out all day today in Brum' and I have an early start tomorrow so this is one from a few days ago, that I happen to have on my desktop... Lewis enjoying a game of Downfall, which incidentally I won! Makes a nice change as Lewis is so competitive these days he usually beats me...

Sunny side up!

Miranda looking pleased with the world as she's sitting in Gregory's booster seat! Aren't I the big girl.... This taken with my old Nikkor 35mm f2 lens is much sharper than anything the newer zoom can manage, but the drawback of a fixed focal lens is you have to move it to get your composition - so you can just see her little finger getting ready to to jab out and touch my lens - just because she knows it will get a reaction!!!

Wild Things....

Lewis is reading a book about Leopards from the library at the moment, so here he is deep in thought on the African trail. His evening read varies widely between the Secret Seven, the Adventures of Paddington Bear, National Geographic or something like Roald Dahl. Tonight as I was going to load my blog he saw a business card on my desk for AVSS Ltd, and remarked " did you know that they are the first letters of the words Audi VW Seat Skoda?" - do you know what Lewis - I've been wondering that but not come up with the answer.... you're a genius!

Born Skippy!

It's a shame the chair got in the way, as Miranda looks uncommonly grown up here. She's dragging her painting overalls along, and still managing to walk the walk. One of her favourite tricks is to sit down on the rug and pull the overall over her head in a peekaboo sort of way, ...making sure that you are watching first!

Reflecting...

I was looking at some old photographs of Calshot today, taken about 80 years ago when things looked quite different. It made me think about image making and how far we've traveled over the last century or so, and how important the discovery of photography has been to our undersatnding of the world around us. We are able to define history based upon the documentary evidence of images, but for every image that is seen there is a huge amount of history that is unseen...

My camera going pop yesterday leaves me with a dilemma, do I not post, do I get my film camera out (process the film, dry it and scan the images etc etc), do I post just words, or do I show images out of synch from the archive?

Not able to draw a conclusion I'm afraid, so this one is from about a week ago, as Miranda makes the transition from ape to homo erectus. She's walking around quite confidently now, but today she has grazes on her knees, as she's hitting the ground with such force now when she finally keels over!

Arty Portrait

This was one of my favourite images of last year, and I have reworked it to mark the passing of my Nikon D70 which has taken a trip to the other side. It has been a great camera and I have lots of good images to show for it...

You'll have to enlarge this one to see the detail.

Storytime!

One of the distinct advantages of having two older brothers as a role model, is that Miranda just loves picking up books and reading them (....as opposed to tearing them apart)

She's quite content to sit there looking at the pictures, and it's not until you notice that the book is upside down that you realise she can't actually make much sense of it!

Welcome to the car crash...

Miranda looking like she's been to the Make up Department at Universal Studios, rather than Smokey Joe's Cafe! Every single frame I took had her hand in her mouth, so she's obviously in pain, but oh what a smile.

I'm not sure what she's been eating but I'm looking forward to having some for my tea....

3 points for anyone able to make the Throbbing Gristle connection.

Game on!

It hardly seems five minutes since we were playing this game with Lewis for the first time, but now we are teaching Gregory the rules. Greg seems to have much better recognition skills when looking at the board to identify the pieces he needs, but slightly less enthusiasm to get to the finish line as quickly as Lewis! Now there's a surprise!

Note little Mippy trying to get herself in the heart of the action, which reminds me of a great photo we have of Lewis as a bab.

Peekaboo!

Today I chased Miranda into the study, but when I got there with my camera she was nowhere to be found. She was hiding behind the chair!

So we played peekaboo!

Our other chef!

This photo was taken was actually taken on Saturday, but after Greg had asked me if he could do the posting. So somehow this picture of Lewis serving up his olive bread nearly didn't make it onto the blog... This was one of the finest loaves of bread I have tasted in a while, it had good texture and was eaten in less than 24hrs - he's a jolly fine Baker.

Well done Spot!

After some very heavy rain this morning and high winds, Lewis and I went for a nice walk down to Calshot from Ashlett Creek. When we got back home there was a lovely surprise awaiting us - some tasty home baked cakes, and Gregory was just putting the finishing touches on.... Smarties! Now all we need is a cup of tea....

The boys!

Gregory is writing todays post...

"..we are the boys and we are at Lepe! We were climbing on the rocks. Mummy was at home with Miranda because she was in bed."

Here I come!

Less than a week since she finally got the hang of walking and she has a look of confidence about her! As I managed to take a few pictures lunchtime, I thought I'd better get some documentary evidence up ready for the weekend.... She's been having terrible trouble with her teeth over the last few days though, and has been crying a lot, so it's not been easy getting the motivation to take some fresh pictures.

Good boy Greg

Greg has been making lots of effort with his homework, and he's really pleased with his progress. He suddenly find he can read things, so I've been having fun pretending to trick him and he's been putting me right!

He's looking very studious here, but I'm not sure of the task...

Dem bones!

The boys playing a game of Spotty Dogs, and Lewis mysteriously always seems to get the cards with three bones. Is it good luck or good fortune... I wonder!

Tonight he's been reading James Herriott, so tomorrow he'll be swaggering down the road like a farmer I expect.

Now he's hovering at my shoulder as he wants to do a posting on his Lego-club blog.

Harmless fun!

Lewis has been doing science experiments in school, and he decided to try one of them at home! How many beakers full of water can you fit into Gregory before he bursts..... The Chinese allegedly used this as a form of torture, but Gregory thinks it's highly amusing!

Monday, February 05, 2007

Me and Mrs Mippy watching the birds in the garden at lunchtime, we get all sorts but mainly blue tits, blackbirds, chaffinches, sparrows, robins, greenfinches, long tailed tits, nuthatches and the like. I love the birds who seem to look back at me with a mixture of uncertainty and gratitude that I occasionally get from my own family. What exactly am I doing here?

Graffiti Artist

Greg was busy making drawings on the rocks at Lepe yesterday, as he'd found a new trick with a piece of soft stone.

We had a gorgeous walk in the forest today from Denny Wood over towards Lyndhurst via Holmhill Enclosure, and then over to Longwater Lawn and along the edges of Matley Wood. Lunch was eaten at the Beaulieu Road Inn and by the time we got back to the car, we'd been out 5 hours! The light was fantastic and it was fresh and warm. It would have been a long walk for Miranda, so it was lucky we brought the carrier!!

Giant steps are what you take....

Today was the first day when Miranda took those first few steps that became a walk! Now she's managed a step or two she's swaggering along as though she's done it all her life.... Well, when she grows up a bit she'll be able to look back at the blog and be reminded that it happened today!

It really was lovely to experience the first time that someone approaches you with open arms for a cuddle!

Feller Cutey

Mr Brown turning on the charm! I like the little star in the corner of this picture, I'm not sure if I planned it there, but it's there!

I can see clearly now the rain has gone...

Lewis slightly obscured by frosted glass in front of my computer monitor. The lighting for this is my desk fluorescent lamp, creating a lovely soft lighting on Lew's face with a strong dark shadow.

Lewis has been studying Boudecia in school today so he did a nice illustration for his teacher after tea.

Tonight he's listening to Doctor John' s rendition of "When the Saints go marching in" as it's his guitar music this week. Lewis is very excited because his teacher has told him he's nearly ready to move onto the next book.
